StereoScape Dreamoc HD3
Pros:
1. Very easy to use.
2. Lots of useful accessories.
Cons:
1. Not perfect for large audiences.
2. Preparing the content is a bit tricky.
The StereoScape Dreamoc HD3 is a holographic display system with 3 viewable sides. The system lets you integrate 3D holographic content with physical products. By using the key-protected back door, you can easily access the chamber and the media player. In order to get various types of illusions, you can experiment with different object placements and picture surfaces. The system closely imitates the physical world by offering an appropriate amount of video pixels. Its philosophy is to break out of traditional frameworks and use live spaces as the framework. Based on Cut Out Video technology, the system shows videos in a free and unframed format.
For preparing the master file, the content should have Full HD resolution and the frame rate needs to be at least 30 fps. The perfect file format should be a sequence of TGA or PNG images with an alpha channel. All objects accompanying text should have rotation applied. It is also recommended to provide 3D depth to all text. The camera should focus on the center of the object. If you are using a soundtrack, it should be a separate 48 kHz, 16 bit wave file.
When making films for the Dreamoc, you have to keep in mind that the content will be displayed as holographic objects inside the glass chamber. With a pyramid shape, the glass chamber includes multiple trapezoids or triangular shaped sides. Unless you are experimenting with different types of content, content in each side of the system is identical. In order to have a solid output, it is recommended to have the content sample evaluated by Realfiction itself, or one of its authorized partners.
Remember that pure black and gradients of black are almost invisible in the films shown in the Dreamoc. If the objects have any dark shadow, the shadows will look like holes in the projected image. Therefore, it is suggested that the objects should be provided with more than normal light, which will be useful in avoiding harsh shadows and making the objects clearer. The content should never exceed the supported 4:3 aspect ratio. Also, make sure that parts of the object are not outside the boundaries of the image. You should also be careful in regards to things like glows, light emissions, light beams, small particles, etc. Once the content is ready, you have to finalize it for the Dreamoc HD3. The finalizing process can be done by using various compositing software, including Adobe After Effects. There is also a dedicated template for Dreamoc HD3 films.
It is very easy to open the back door of the Dreamoc HD3 and place an object inside the display. On the back side, there are separate buttons for turning the system on and off, putting it in standby mode, opening the menu, up and down keys for volume and spotlight, an SD card slot and an input port. The buttons are a bit retracted in order to prevent accidental pressing. You can use a pen, a pencil or any slim device to press the buttons.
Every Dreamoc HD3 is provided with a demo movie. Once you switch on the system, the demo movie will play automatically. In order to play a new movie, simply remove the old SD card and insert the new one with the movie you want to play. The Dreamoc can be used to display real time generated contents as well. For instance, you can interact with a virtual product by using your smartphone. As you don’t have to install any additional software for this purpose, this will work on any smartphone with a working internet connection. Just scan a QR code with your smartphone, which will open a link in your web browser. In the browser window, you will find various options to interact with the product. Another interactive technology lets you control a watch through hand gestures. While a Kinect will register the hand movements, the real time rendering of the watch will also be displayed simultaneously. The watch will also display the correct time, of course.
There are lots of additional accessories available for the Dreamoc HD3. Among them, the flight case is very useful if you plan to carry the system with you. The expandable handle and the wheels of the flight case have made the system very easy to transport to different locations. It will also keep the system safe and make the packing process a lot faster. Then there’s the stand, which will place the system at a perfectly viewable height. The stand can be used for visual branding as well. There is also an iPad mount for interacting with the virtual object(s). Dreamoc PLAY, the dedicated iOS player for the Dreamoc HD3, will act as a touchscreen interface for the system.
With lots of unique interactions, a simple controlling system and lots of practical, useful accessories, the Dreamoc HD3 has all the potentials of becoming a very popular 3D projection system. That’s why we are happy to include the StereoScape Dreamoc HD3 on our list of iReviews 2015 best holographic projectors.
